The Third Age

Behind the Scenes of Episode 8

Episode 8 is definitely one of those episodes that spanned a good deal of time in production. Watching the episode now, I find myself not asking what month was that scene shot in, but rather what year. Was it 2008? Was it 2009? With so much time passed, here’s some funny anecdotes that still stick in my head from production of this high octane episode.

First off, this was the first shoot date of The Third Age that had any overtly sexually charged images in them, and I do recall that shooting on set was pretty natural and not really awkward in the least. It was just like any other shoot, just this time to of our actors were straddling each other instead of facing each other. So, check that off the list of Third Age First, the first kiss of the Third Age.

Interesting tidbit. When the Scene of the Chaos Gods Seth and Alicia tormenting Jerrod by taking over his office was first conceived, we wanted it to be “Rave” inspired. We talked of loud, bass bumping Techno and a disco light show that would make the environment come alive with lights and sound. We even found an art director through craiglist to help us realize our vision. Everything was going awesome, until she showed up on shoot day an hour late, and the only thing she carried in to set was 2 or 3 glowsticks. So much for a fully realized rave!!! In fact, she basically dropped off the glowsticks, stuck around for an hour or two offering no artistic direction and then left never to be heard from again. She didn’t even ask to be reimbursed for the glow sticks purchase. So maybe we did have the last laugh after all.

Another story I’ll never forget was the assistance of Raul’s “Aunt” Karin Elgai. Towards the end of shooting the “Rave” scene, we were assisted by someone I had never met before who I had assumed was Raul’s Aunt, because he told us immediately following the shoot he was meeting her afterwards. She looked rather young and absolutely nothing like him to be related, but I didn’t question considering she was helping by striking and panning the lights to help convey the chaotic nature of the scene. It wasn’t till weeks later at a party that I learned she was not only 4 years younger than him, but a native Israeli. She was in fact the complete opposite of Raul’s aunt and just a friend he met through the fashion industry. I still laugh reflecting on this because my assumption stayed for weeks that these two were related although it defied all logic.
